AAC Software

Software that uses or supports ARASAAC pictograms:

TICO e1.0 Back to Software menu

It is now available a new version of TICO Project along with a new website where you can download the program. It is currently translated into Catalan, English and German, but there is an intention to translate it into several languages.

TICO is placed inside a collaborating project between Informática e Ingeniería de Sistemas Department of Centro Politécnico Superior of University of Zaragoza and Special Education Public School Alborada

The main aim of this application is to shift the traditional definition of on-paper communication board to the new possibilities that the computer medium offers us, making interaction and modification of the near environment easier for the people who have serious problems to communicate orally. As it has the sweeping function, it can be used with devices others than the mouse, enabling accessibility to those people with motor problems.

In conclussion, TICO appears as a communicator, that is, several interconnected boards that allow the user to communicate with the people sorrounding him.

Given its versatility and easiness, the second aim of TICO is to be used as an element of access to the different areas of the syllabus through the design of activities aimed to that. It is now possible to add videos in the activitities.

Finally, TICO was designed as an interface for future implementations of environmental control, enabling its use for other aspects appart from communication.

TICO Project is made of two different and independent applications, but they are complementary between them: Editor and Interpreter:

You can get the user's guide, downloads and projects developed by users of this tool on the new website. You can also check that you can incorporate all the pictograms from ARASAAC to the TICO images gallery.

COMUNICA PROJECT Back to Software menu

Comunica Project arises from the collaboration between Communication Technologies Group (GTC) from the Engineering Investigation Institute of Aragón (I3A) of University of Zaragoza and the technical help professionals from Special Education Public School “Alborada” (C.P.E.E. Alborada) to make the investigation on Speech Technologies available for the educative community.
This project intends to make all the tools developed under its supervision free for all. We also consider the users’ opinion very important, and that’s why we give you the opportunity to register as a user of the website in order to allow you to communicate with the team that is behind this project, ask your doubts and questions and to let us know your opinion.

The four tools you can download from the website are:

These tools work with different pre-language elements and allow us to monitor the pupil’s vocalic emission. PreLingua provides us with different activities that allow us to work with elements such as breathing, vocalization, pitch, intensity and the distinction of voice emission in a very visual way. ViVo enables us to see the intensity, fundamental frequency and formants of our students. It is thought to allow us to see the voice production of our pupil in real time.

These tools work at the articulation level of language through the repetition of words and easy sentences and easy riddles. Once you have installed the file we give you, you can access the main program (Vocaliza.exe or VocalizaL2.exe) to work with all these elements. These programs work showing aural and visual support for the pupil and telling him the quality of his pronunciation. Working with Vocaliza forces the pupil to improve his pronunciation until it is recognised by the automatic speech recognizer system, while VocalizaL2 does not include the recognizer and provides assessment at phonemic level.

This tool works at the pragmatic level of language through the set of scenes that the pupil must solve describing objects or participating in a scenario. Once you have installed the file we give you, you can access the main program (Cuentame.exe) to work with those elements. We are working to include more predefined scenes for this application.

VIRTUAL MOUSE Back to Software menu

Nobody doubts today about the importance of the new technologies of the information as tool of access to communication, to the different areas of the curriculum and to the leisure or exchange of ideas. A simple click of the mouse creates an open window to a world that dazzles us and motivates us towards new experiences. But this simple movement, sometimes, almost unconscious, does not represent the same effort for all the persons, depriving some of them of the opportunities that offer to us all these technological advances.

The Virtual Mouse is a computer application thought for persons with motive severe or serious disability and that present serious difficulties to handle a device of traditional mouse. Therefore the fundamental aim is the control of the physical mouse of the computer by means of other type of devices (keyboard, push-button or microphone) adapted to the individual characteristics of every subject.

By means of the Virtual Mouse, we will be able to control the movement of the pointer in the different directions of the space as well as all the functions assigned to each of the buttons of the mouse.

The different actions that the Virtual Mouse can execute are selected by means of an automatic sweep of the elements that appear in the window and that have been previously set up. The user selects the movement or the action desired by means of the adapted device and when it finishes the action, it will begin again the sweep on the different elements.

The program has a drop-down menu that allows to form the different options - design, configuration of the board, speed of sweep, speed of the cursor, etc. - we are going to use, adapting them to the individual characteristics of each one of the subjects. Another available option is saving and loading the mouse with the specific adjustments for every user.

PICTURES CUBE Back to Software menu

Descargar documentación del cubo de imágenesThe " bucket of images " is a project developed by Juán Gallego Blanco, teacher of And. Physics of the CPEE Alborada(Zaragoza). It is a series of activities of stimulation relating to propioception level , as well as exteroceptive level, that favor the interaction of the pupil with the environment and that try to propitiate a rich environment in visual, tactile, olfactory and auditory sensations.
This resource is aimed to pupils with educational special needs that present a high degree of disability (plurideficientes), which implies that their perceptive, motive and communicative systems can be altered so they are not able to understand in an active way stimuli coming from a near environement. With this type of stimulation, we try that the child feels, perceives and assimilates different sensations of the environment. We want that he interacts with the environment that we sense beforehand and coordinates his body and senses during every interaction.

By means of the different activities that we propose them with the bucket of images, we try to create and offer a controlled environment, in which, in a directed way, we sense beforehand different types of stimuli to obtain an emotional certain response: easing, concentration, attention, etc

Given the characteristics of the bucket, we can use also the activities generated from the same one to be employed at aspects of modification of conduct with pupils who present serious alterations in the same one.

In-TIC Back to Software menu

Herramienta de prelenguaje The project In-tic (Integration of the Technologies of the Information and the Communications in the groups of persons with disability) makes possible that people with functional diversity could improve their personal autonomy, thanks to a system of support that allows to personalize the use of all the functionalities and programs of the computer. By means of the creation and configuration of virtual keyboards it is possible to configure it for people with functional diversity (physical, cognitive or sensory) could use the computer, accede to the Internet, communicate, execute specific applications, games, etc. This system can also be used as communicator in conventional like portable computers, tabletPCs and mobile telephones and it will be available for free for all the users in the Internet.

In-tic has been stimulated by the Foundation Orange and realized entirely by the Center of Medical Computer science and Radiological Diagnosis of the University of A Coruña (IMEDIR). The characteristics of customization, access to computer and communicator for computer and mobile telephones, together with its free distribution, make it unique, since there does not exist, at the present day, any application of these characteristics at the disposal of the groups of persons with disability

PLAPHOONS Back to Software menu

Plaphoons is a communication program created by Jordi Lagares designed for people with motor disabilities that can not communicate through speech. Traditionally people with these disabilities could communicate with the help of another person and a book of symbols called communication board. The main purpose of this program is to give more independence to these people by allowing them to build their messages, suggestions or just to say what pleases them completely and independently. It can also be used to enable such persons to access the skills of reading and writing.

Plaphoons enables to create panels and from these, structure symbols to create messages. These messages can be displayed directly on screen, printed and / or be heard by synthesized or digitized voice. It can be used as editor panels for printing on paper using symbols defined by the user or ARASAAC symbols. It can be used directly as computer communication board activated by a touch screen or using the traditional mouse, directly, using a joystrick or with a switch that makes the left click function using the auto scan option.

And finally, it can be used as a communicator of recorder, using speech synthesis capabilities and / or recorded voice if you have a portable computer controlled by a touch screen, using the traditional mouse, mouse adaptation, or by a switch using the automatic scan.

PictoSelector Back to Software menu

Picto Selector is a Windows application designed to make the selection and printing of pictograms much easier and it has been developed by Martijn van der Kooij. The application is free software and it is available in several languages. This is the link to download it: PECS for all.

The included pictograms come from different systems, like ARASAAC, Straight-Street.com and Sclera.be and they are translated into Dutch, English, Spanish and French. The application itself is translated into these languages.

The pictograms search, using autocomplete, can be done by names or categories. Once you have found a suitable picotgram, you can drag it from the search frame to the sheet or other Windows applications.

You can also add text frames or a part of a photograph very easily. Although these screenshots are from Martijn's web, I have tried with other pictures and it works amazingly.

As it has a lot of options when clicking the left or right button of the mouse, the application has a great variety of possibilities.

Finally, we have to thank Martijn van der Kooij for having developed such a fantastic application and for using ARASAAC to expand the application's catalogue.
